In 2010, with access to a shop space, I had a great idea—set up an artist-run gallery! Studying Fine Art at the University of Ballarat (now Federation Uni) meant access to plenty of fabulous, skilled artists and academics. Pretty soon, a committee was formed and Space 22, at 22 Main Road, Bakery Hill (Ballarat), was established. The aim was to offer local artists an affordable, professionally presented exhibition and gathering space to share their work with local audiences. The gallery operated for almost 2 years, giving more than 100 artists the opportunity to exhibit in Ballarat, expand their recognition, and build the arts community.
Space 22 ARI Gallery: Co-Founder
This project, run with a fantastic team including Kim Anderson, Claire Blake, Phil Berry, Deborah Hill, Ros Lawson, Geoff Wallace and me, developed skills in gallery operation - project management, exhibition scheduling, curatorial work, installation and deinstallation, volunteer coordination, marketing, event management, and more. We received support from the local paper, The Courier; however, at the time their articles were only available in print media, images of which can be seen on our (now inactive) Facebook page - view here.
