CREATIONS: artist statement

I create sculptural objects and large installation artworks. My core theme is resilience, and I examine this in a temporal context, with a focus on qualities such as distressed surfaces, referencing antiquity and philosophy, and revealing beauty through imperfection. With curiosity being a driving force of creativity, I question assumptions and challenge conventions. I believe that making unique and beautiful works of art is an act of resistance in a world that is being exploited by the forces of capitalist consumerism.

My personal motto is 'Seeking Wisdom, Finding Beauty, Sharing Love'.

I have a collection of philosophical aphorisms that I intend to continue exploring and expanding on through my art. Many of them adhere to Stoic philosophy, such as ‘Pain is Inevitable, Suffering is Optional,’ or the Buddhist idea ‘If you wish to see the truth, then hold no opinions’; and some are literary references, such as or ‘Life Shrinks and Expands in Proportion to One’s Courage’ (Anais Nin).
My primary medium is clay, and I focus on form and surface textures, using the natural colours of the clay body combined with stains or oxides, and minimal glazing for effect. I relish the sheen and patina of hammered metal and combine it with my ceramic works. The materials I work with are elemental, and yes, extractive in their sourcing. I am resource aware - this means Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; conscious firing choices, and minimal waste, as environmental and climate issues are important to me. Individuals can make a difference in terms of climate action, as it takes individuals coming together to form collective action.
