Facts of Matter: Grant Writer, Creative Producer, Curator

In 2023-24, I successfully applied to the City of Port Phillip's Cultural Development Fund on behalf of Clay Matters. This grant allowed Clay Matters to present the 'Facts of Matter'  exhibition at Linden New Art’s Project Space in Feb-March 2024. I undertook the role of Creative Producer for this project. The project commenced with an online meeting between science communicator, Simon Torok from Scientell, where group members were able to discuss their environmental anxieties with Simon and discuss the facts of the environmental impacts of their ceramic studio practices. Simon gave the group a real-world perspective and relieved us of the burden of guilt in many instances.
Alongside the exhibition, each artist produced a short digital artist talk about their work, which can be viewed on the Linden Gallery's webpage (link below).
For the public program accompanying the exhibition, I produced and hosted a public panel conversation with expert guests, Deborah Hart (Chair of CLIMARTE), Simon Torok (Scientell), and Jane Sawyer (Slow Clay), at Linden New Art, a discussion about the value of visual art in climate activism as well as sustainability in studio practice. This discussion was enthusiastically received by the audience, who were keen to continue the conversation well after formal proceedings ended.
Clay Matters also commissioned a curatorial essay on the exhibition from writer and artist, Dr Robyn Phelan, which you can read here.
The exhibition theme aimed to connect with audiences emotionally and intellectually on the topic of the environmental and climate crises, advocating for sustainable action against climate change and environmental damage, and promoting hope and optimism. Each of the ten artists responded to their own meaningful reference and, through their creative practices, explored what sustainability means to us both as individuals and as a collective of ceramicists. You can read more about the exhibition, see images and digital artist talks, here.
